Since many of us missed the exhibition at our school, please check out this link to learn more about the work of Frida Kahlo. Google Arts and Culture is a great site to see great art and artists. Let me know if you view anything that interests you. I can give you credit for it.

Assignment - All Classes

Due Date - April 27th

During this difficult time artists are often called upon to make work in response to crisis, whether it is political, environmental, social etc.  This work allows the artist and viewer to make sense of the world around them.  We see this in the work of artists such as Picasso and Diego Rivera.  (google them for more info).

The assignment is to create a work of art that responds the the current Corona Viruns Pandemic.  This is having societal affects world-wide.  What kind of artwork can you make concerning your emotions and feelings about how this is affecting you, your family, your friends, etc.?  This does not have to be a literal piece.  In other words, you do not have to make a realistic drawing of something, but you certainly may.  You can express yourself through an abstract work.  What colors, lines, shapes, marks of any kind, reflect how you are feeling right now?  How can you express, through a work of art, the impact his is having on your life and society as a whole?

Use whatever materials you may have available.  Pencil and copy paper is fine if that is all you have on hand.  Sculpting with found objects, recycled objects, newspaper, magazines are an option.  Collage is another great way to create art using existing images.  Look on line to see what other artists are doing to get ideas.

Once you have completed the work, please write a one-page response answering these questions:

  • Please explain your inspiration for this project.
  • Tell me why you chose the media, medium, materials you used.
  • Talk about the process and how you went about composing your work.
  • What impact did expressing yourself with a work of art have on your ability to cope during this difficult time.
  • Please talk to me about anything else that came up during the creation of the work, ie. challenges, successes, processes, etc.
  • Did you show anyone your piece?  How did they respond?
Allow yourself to relax and enjoy the process.  There is no right or wrong way to approach this.  I won't be there to give instruction, so use materials and processes that you feel most comfortable with.  Remember cutting pictures out of newspapers and magazines is something at all levels can do.  Collage can be a very effective way to create a piece like this.  You will be assessed on your effort.  You will unfortunately receive 0 if you do not hand anything in.

Communication

Please continue to check this site, google classroom and your emails for communication from me.  I will also try to set up some google meets so that we can talk face to face and you will have the opportunity to ask questions and show me your work real time.

I'm here for you!  Again, use art to de-stress and relieve anxiety.  It's also a great way to use your time to keep your brain active and healthy.  Fill up your sketchbooks!!

Hope to see you all soon!

Mrs. J. :)
